T O P I C R E V I E Wbklyn55Any opinions on whether this foil (eBay item 221791977653) was flown or excess trim before launch?vamanboatinI am the seller of this Kapton foil from Intrepid. When I bought it a few years back I considered it scrap with no documentation of flown status. This is being sold as Not Flown. SkythingsI was interested and intrigued by this lucite. I started comparing the images of the lucite by itself with the images of the lucite Alan Bean is holding in the picture included in the auction. My issue is, I believe Alan Bean is not holding the exact lucite in the photo that is offered for sale. The folds in the mylar are not the same. I know flash photography can bounce off folded mylar and give different effects, but it does not even look close to me. This auction infers the lucite has credibility because it was held and signed by Alan Bean. The signature looks authentic to me, but I would leave that to others here to confirm. The seller mentions here in this forum the item is being offered as "not flown". It does not specifically say that in your auction sir. My read on the auction is a novice buyer would assume it was flown and authenticated by the Alan Bean as per the picture and signature. That was my first impression before I started researching the item with Google. With all respect, it is an interesting piece, however I would need more information for me to part with my funds before I would purchase it, or make an offer. Facts such as — who issued the lucite, when and where was it signed, how many were issued, what was the source of the mylar. What is Alan Bean's policy on signing objects like this? I know some astronauts are fussy about what they sign and others will sign your shoes for a fee. fredtravUnless the auction was amended, it clearly states that it is being sold as not flown. vamanboatin quote:Originally posted by Skythings:My issue is, I believe Alan Bean is not holding the exact lucite in the photo that is offered for sale. When you hold the piece in hand and look at the photo they look identical to me. I believe your correct the photo is playing tricks on you. I also believe the photo does give this particular item provenance along with, in my opinion, a great signature from Alan Bean. I do not know where this Lucite originated But I am sure someone on this forum could help with that. Yes the auction has been amended since my post.Skythings quote:Originally posted by vamanboatin:When you hold the piece in hand and look at the photo they look identical to me. If the photo is identical, then yes you are correct in regards to provenance. For me it was challenging using a photo of a photo comparing them together. Obviously holding the lucite in your hands next to the photo would be better. I will stand corrected. Thank you for amending the auction to be much clearer regarding the flown status.bklyn55My bad for making an offer before asking the question but kudos to vamanboatin for being honest and declining all offers due to the confusion about flown/unflown and then modifying his description.
